Google Search Story Tutorial

Date March 4, 2010

After the 2010 Google Super Bowl ad I was inspired to try my hand at making one of these very cool screencast videos. In case you missed the blog post about it, here is the Google ad that aired and my first attempt to do one:

Lot’s of folks want to know how I did that so I made a tutorial covering the details. Here ya go:

I talk about a couple of main concepts used in this video that are applicable in a wide variety of screencast work:

1. Recording in “Scenes” - Have you ever gotten frustrated with trying to record a video because you messed up at some point or gotten out of sync? Maybe you’re just trying to do too many things at once!

2. Recording for Clarity – A couple of useful tips for getting crystal clear captures.

3. “Speed Typing” Effect – 3 ways you can get the nice fast typing effect.

4. The Power of Music – Music = Emotion and can change the entire “feel” of your video and the emotion of your message.

Cool Search Tips

Doing standard searches can be effective when telling your story but don’t forget to think “outside the box”. Here are some links to interesting things you can use that you might not know about:

    Lon,

Thank you so much for all your video tutorials. I have been following you for quite some time and without fail, every video I watch I pick up a very significant little JEWEL that helps me tremendously. I saw Andy Jenkins do the speed typing on one of his videos and I knew I had to learn that technique. And low and behold, here comes Lon with an explanation within a week of me seeing Andy’s video.

I really appreciate what you do.

    Have a great day,
    Alan Breen

Great video, Lon! Like you, I really enjoy seeing more and more marketers learning to use video in their marketing mix – it’s raidly becoming a necessity for those wanting to get noticed in an overcrowded and noisy niche like Internet Marketing.

In the 70′s a production suite was $500,000. In the 80′s or early 90′s the AVID system dropped that to $50,000. Now, a home computer, HD Cam & great editing software like Camtasia, Sony Vegas, Corel Video Studio Pro and Pinnacle Studio Pro can all be had for under $5,000 in total! With fast hard drives up to 2 TB now, we just need faster RAM & processors for rending 1920×1080 HD avi’s and we should see a real explosion of HD videos being used regularly! Hopefully some hardware manufacturer is working on a system for rendering video faster, like the VRAM on high-end video cards but optimized just for full-motion video…

    Hey Lon,

That was fun to watch. I wished I had seen it BEFORE I did a Google Search story for my client. Like you, I tried the speed typing effect in Camtasia and since you can’t really preview it I ended up running short on video and long on music because of how the speed typing sped up the video in so many places. I think if you render the whole thing first then come back and add music later you can solve that problem. If you want to see the video I created it is up at Screencast.com here

    Lon,

Great video on how to do that cool Google search video. I’ll be sure to make a cool promo video using this technique and share the results.

Thanks for all the great Camtasia training, you can tell you put a lot of time and effort into making your videos fun, entertaining, and informative!

    Fantastic post Lon.
I am quite new to making Camtasia videos so the bit about using markers was very useful to me.
I will be attempting to produce my own Google Ad type video and will post back here when I’m done.

    Thank you.

    Lon,

Just a newby suggestion to make this more clear…I wish you had told me on the front end to not do any editing in Camtasia, but rather to do all editing in Sony Vegas.

I edited the whole project and then when I got ready to put into Vegas to manage the typing speed found out that I had to start with the individual AVI extracts from the camrec files.

Still a great video tutorial, but wish I had just started in Vegas. Thanks.
